Campus Clean-up as a Conservation Effort

Each year, my Biology 151 course ends with a unit of ecology, and in that unit we talk about conservation. Our conservation discussion falls on the last regular week of classes. This also means that it is the last regular week for labs. By this time in the semester, not only are the students burnt out, but so am I. That is why the "conservation lab" is always a welcomed way to end the semester.

For our lab activity, we participate in a campus-clean up. Teams of two or three students, armed with a large garbage bag, comb the campus picking up any trash. The trash is usually quite abundant because of the build up over the winter. As you can see, this spring was a huge success, with my students finding all kinds of garbage.

We were fortunate to have a beautiful day to help keep our beautiful campus clean!
